Safari 3 for Windows
Apple launches Safari 3 Web Browser for Windows
You might have already heard that the Apple Safari 3 web browser is now available to download for Microsoft Windows. Apple claims that Safari 3 is the fastest browser on the internet, loading pages and executing JavaScript much faster then Internet Explorer 7 and FireFox 2. On the apple website, they have nice graphs that compare Safari to IE, FireFox, and Opera but are the claims true? It definitely seems generally faster and opinions around the internet confirm that. However, in the case of Ajax-intensive web applications, Wired News claims that Safari is actually slower than both IE7 and Firefox 2.
In the first 2 days, more than one million copies of Safari3 have been downloaded but as soon as people started using the browser, many security flaws quickly popped up. Some suggested that Apple should have done a better job of testing the browser for these security vulnerabilities but Apple quickly responded with fixes and updates to the browser. It’s still beta and come on, Windows users are use to bugs, so who cares as long as Apple quickly responds with fixes. Apple released this browser at a really excellent time, right before the iPhone release, which runs Safari. This allows windows users to test their iPhone Web 2.0 apps. I personally think that this will pull many PC users to the MAC world but some disagree saying that now there is no reason to buy a MAC. Still, if many Windows users start using Safari and prefer it over IE, they might just buy a MAC thinking that generally everything on a MAC is better.
Since I do a ton of cross-browser compatibility and I do not personally own a MAC, I like having Safari and being able to test for that browser. Also, after using Safari for about an hour, I must say that its quite nice. My first impression is that it is quite fast. I also didn’t encounter any bugs or problems but I only tested it for a short time. I like the User Interface and I like the MAC look but for now I am sticking to FireFox. To run it you need Windows XP or Windows Vista, a minimum of 256 MB of memory and a system with at least a 500 MHz Intel Pentium processor. Give it a shot.
