More Web Fonts using sIFR
Typography Options thanks to sIFR
Most websites use system fonts to preserve the look and feel across platforms and browsers. You don’t want your MAC or Linux or IE or “whatever” people to not read the content of your website because you are using some fancy font. However, there are only so many system fonts and if you are looking for something fancy, you don’t have too many options. Most people will create the cool text in Photoshop and show the fancy fonts on the website as images. Recently, however, I have been playing around with sIFR (Scalable Inman Flash Replacement), which uses flash to display the font.
The coolest thing about sIFR is that your text is content and not an image, so search engines will read and index your content. If you don’t have flash, the font is replaced by a system font. sIFR might have a small impact on performance, but if that is an issue try out sIFR Light (actually, it’s called sIFR Lite). sIFR has been around for years now so this is not new news but it is definitely a good tool to check out for any web designer. In some designs, it might be the only solution for your typography problems. If you are running WordPress, check out the WordPress sIFR Plugin.
