MediaTemple Problems

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

I have been getting database errors ever since I signed up with MediaTemple and today the whole website was offline. What is going on? They better fix things ASAP. I was really excited about the grid server technology from MediaTemple at the low price of $20 a month but now it looks like you get what you pay for. Anyone else having these problems?

[…] The thing that clinched the decision in the end is MediaTemple’s new GridServer (gs) hosting package. This is a revolutionary hosting setup (which everyone will have to do in a few years in order to stay in business). Your sites are no longer tied down to specific hardware, that comes with its own limitations. Instead your sites are hosted by clusters of servers, that can scale instantly to handle large spikes in traffic (ie: if you are dugg, slashdotted and redd at the same time, your shared hosting plan might not be able to handle it, while (gs) will theoretically not even notice). As all of my previous hosting woes have been caused by faulty equipment (and bad service), and since (gs) seems to have solved the problems that come with having your site tied to one specific piece of equipment, in the end I went with MediaTemple (gs). (And although there have been some reported problems with the service, I have not experienced anything but very fast loadtime and well-designed control panels since I have started migrating my sites over). definitely having the same problems, and i have about 2 dozen of my clients on (gs) too, and when their sites go down, they call me, since they don’t know the difference in responsibility between a designer and a hosting company.

Yes, similar problems. Might be getting better lately, but the same thing as you’ve had -> database going away for a couple of minutes at a time.

Same here. Apache goes down as well. And the AccountCenter isn’t working either.

Down for more than an hour today. AccountCenter, email, everything.

Way too bad!

Makes Dreamhost look like… a dream host!

Are they working on this? I was going to go with Dream Host.

there was a firmware update happening all morning, but is now apparently done. it was an emergency one, and they are going to be updating gridserver 1.1 soon. so i guess it’s being fixed. was sort of bad that i couldn’t connect to any sites today tho.

same issues almost every day for the past 2 weeks:
- site downtime
- database issues
- email issues
- long queues on the phone

this is a joke. we’re dropping them. i assume all their clients will. i wish they were a public company so that I could short their stock.

I hate to hear people are having problems with MT. I helped a few ex-MT customers move their sites to our servers. Feel free to drop us a line.

To anyone who didn’t jump ship from MT, are you still having issues, or have they been resolved…
Last complaints that I’ve been able to spot are more than a month old, it looks like growth issues, but want to be sure before we commit!

Thanks,
Brad

I find they’re getting quite stable now. I have been happy for the last two months.

They’ve done a lot of improvements since they launched the grid.

And they’ve been very straightforward in their troubles, and credited me a few months of hostings, which of course made me a bit more patient.

Hi Techroam,

Are you still with (MT)? If yes, are you in their (gs) or (dv)?

I have actually found a serious degradation in performance in the last 6 weeks - which led me on this search for info about “Media Temple problems”. It sucks. I am thinking of leaving after I get Google Apps up and running for our business email, etc.

limpeh, I am still with MT and I am on gs. Recently, I have not seen any problems but I was away for a while. I run other sites on DreamHost and I think MT is still superior in a similar price range.

Jim, if you move to another host, please let me know who and if you can comment on it here that would be helpful in case the MT degradation continues.

I’ve been with Media Temple for about 8 months and it’s been fairly unstable the entire time. My site went down 3 different times on Saturday for example. I run an external monitor to ensure availability and unfortunately, I’m only seeing about 98% uptime right now.

The worst part is that for about 10% of the time, the site loads very slowly. I wrote more with some details on my blog:
