Lingoz: Vocabulary, Dictionary, and Words

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

There has been a lot of activity in the Web 2.0 World around Dictionary, word type websites. We have seen user-defined dictionary websites like Urban Dictionary and Wikipedia’s Wiktionary but recently, Lingoz has launched and it’s trying to take over this space. Lingoz is another vocabulary website launched by Eyal Barzilay at Babylon which provides a multilingual dictionary where users can participate by voting, commenting, etc. It’s a comprehensive resource offering users in-context lookup for dictionary definitions and translations in multiple languages. Here are some other Vocabulary websites in this space:

Vocabo - It’s the search engine of words and it’s used to help people learn new vocabulary.
OmegaWiki - It’s a non-profit alternative to Wiktionary, wiki-like, and offers lots of features, like maintaining a list of complex ontologies.
Wordie - Wordie is a social network for word lovers. You can list words and discuss the vocabulary.
Qwiktionary - It’s basically wiktionary with autocomplete to make sure there are no misspellings.

On this subject, I launched a small project called WordMingle which comes out with a daily word and some flickr pictures and asks users to make their own definitions in order to learn the vocabulary. I have abandoned the project pretty quick due to time constrains but you can still check it out and tell me if its worth time to redevelop it and make it better.
